We’ve rounded up 40 walks below that are perfect for families, including sculpture trails and activity walks with plenty of fun surprises to spot and activities to try along the way. Plus most of them are free, so it’s a great way to keep the kids entertained and keep down the cost!
Whether you’re looking for woodland walks, riverside or coastal, popular parks or hidden gems, the walks below have plenty to see and do, including the Gruffalo, Zog, dinosaurs, fairies and more.

Forestry England Trail
π Gruffalo Sculpture Trail: wooden sculptures of the Gruffalo, the Gruffalo’s Child and the other characters from the favourite Julia Donaldson story.

High Force Waterfall Sculpture Trail
π A circular woodland walk featuring sculptures of woodland creatures and the 21 meter high High Force Waterfall, with a free activity sheet available encouraging children to engage their senses on a magical woodland adventure.

Love Exploring AR Trails

Plessey Woods Sculpture Trail
π A range of sculptures and interactive features can be found along the woodland walk. A full circuit of the park is about 1Β½ miles and includes some steep sections and grassy paths, and self-guided orienteering maps are available from the visitor centre.

Sunderland Sculpture Trail
π An easy riverside walk along the River Wear to Roker beach on the final part of the C2C (Coast to Coast cycle path), with 13 sculptures bringing together Sunderland’s past and present.

Teessaurus Sculpture Park
π A 10 acre park with huge colour models of a T-rex, stegosaurus, triceratops, brontosaurus and more, on the banks of the River Tees just outside of Stockton, County Durham. Scan the QR codes on the displays to access three free digital trails, to bring the dinosaurs to life and complete a dino quiz.

Thornley Woods Sculpture Trail
π An easy woodland walk with various animal carvings to spot along the yellow waymarked route. Follow the trail from the Thornley Woods Visitor Centre on a half mile route, with no steps but an undulating gradient. Pick up a free ‘Rowlands Quest’ family activity leaflet from the visitor centre.
