The Snow Queen at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre – the movie!! Available until 15th February 2021.
👇Mumbler Review below👇
A brand new film of the Scarborough theatre’s sell-out show, The Snow Queen, will be available on the SJT website until midnight on 15th February 2021. It’s the first time the famous North Yorkshire theatre has ventured into filming its productions.
Tickets cost just £12, and allow access to the movie for a week from the first click of the ‘play’ button.
The show, which was live on stage at the SJT in December, has been adapted by Nick Lane from the original story by Hans Christian Andersen, and is a Snow Queen like you’ve never seen before – a one-woman whirlwind performed by Polly Lister.
Gerda and Kai are best friends – they share everything – sweets, jokes, games and stories… especially ones about the mysterious ‘Lady in the Sky’ who lives in a faraway palace made of ice.
And some of the stories are silly, and some are a bit spooky, but they are only stories. Aren’t they?
When Kai disappears after seeing a strange shape above the clouds, Gerda knows it’s all real. The Snow Queen has got her best mate and only she can rescue him… by travelling to a world of weirdness and wonderment known as the Other Scarborough before he freezes forever.
Will it be ridiculous? Will there be brilliant songs? Will you look at hedgehogs in the same way again? Yes, yes and possibly not. In that order.
Age Guidance: 5 years plus.

Mumbler Review
This review was written on Thursday 10th December 2020 when the Scarborough and surrounding area were in Tier 2. We were lucky enough to have tickets for The Snow Queen, and have also watched the online version.
Tonight we did something normal!!! We went to see the brand new adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen classic The Snow Queen at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre.
Polly Lister is just brilliant and certainly brought some sparkle into 2020! It is a fantastic performance, the set is fantastic, there are puppets, props, great jokes for all ages, songs, fun and much more. It is certainly a show for McFlurry lovers and wait….until you meet Jean-Claude and Len…!
Henry, aged 8 accompanied me and here is his synopsis:
“The Snow Queen is an amazing one person show which captivated me throughout and made me laugh out loud!
When Mummy told me what we were going to and how there was going to be one actress, I wondered how that was possible having fully enjoyed the book.
I loved it from start to finish. The production is amazingly performed with different voices for each character and you can really tell who is who. Jean Claude and Len were awesome and certainly made me laugh.”
Since then, we have also watched the online version. It was recorded from the live performance and is just as good in the comfort of your own home. Eliza didn’t come with us to the live performance so she was really looking forward to watching. It didn’t disappoint, she loved it! They were both transfixed for the full 97 minutes. It is a great way to buy yourself a bit of time during these testing times.
The Snow Queen can be seen virtually from the SJT website until midnight on 15th February 2021.
