Parents are often anxious about their children’s health, but this year has seen those concerns intensify for many families. From virus fears to ensuring other healthcare needs are met, there have been a range of issues to grapple with.
To help parents access healthcare expertise at a time of sky-high waiting lists and long queues for the GP, a team of doctors have created a new app to help.
Juno is an app that gives parents on-demand access to consultant paediatricians, allowing you to get medical advice for your children in minutes. If you have any concerns about your child, or are unsure whether a GP appointment or visit to A&E is needed, you can message an on-call, GMC registered paediatrician through Juno and get tailored advice from a consultant.
Messages receive a reply from a real doctor (no robots or AI!) within 4 minutes on average and the specialists can advise on next steps – whether that’s care you can provide for your child at home, or a visit to the GP or hospital, or if you have nothing to worry about. You can also securely share photos to help explain what you’re worried about – such as a rash or graze.
The app has been designed by a husband and wife team; Dr Lydia Yarlott, who is an experienced paediatrician, and Philip Mundy, who is a technology specialist. Expecting their first baby, Lydia and Philip were inspired to build Juno after seeing waiting lists for GP and consultant appointments shoot up during the pandemic. They’ve worked alongside a wider team of clinicians and technologists to build an app which is secure, effective, and safe.
Over Christmas, with winter bugs and colds doing the rounds, it can be tricky to get time with your GP. At the same time, many parents are understandably anxious about taking children into healthcare settings. With Juno, families can avoid unnecessary trips to doctors to hospitals, but also ensure that healthcare concerns don’t go unaddressed and that any serious problems are escalated. Often, particularly for new parents, being able to access the peace of mind that comes from speaking to a professional is hugely important.
The team behind Juno also hope that it will take pressure off healthcare services at a time of intense demand and rising queues for treatment.
Paediatricians are available on Juno between 8am and 8pm, 7 days a week (with 24-hour access coming soon) and over 1,000 parents are already using the app to ask questions on everything from colic to colds.
Parents can create a profile for each of their children and input current medical history, including any medications they are already taking, allergies, or pre-existing conditions, to ensure the paediatric recommendations are guided by up-to-date information.
All the Paediatricians providing care through Juno are UK registered with the GMC (General Medical Council) and have MRCPCH (Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health). The majority combine this work with their roles in the NHS.
Right now, the app is completely free to use and can be downloaded from the app store (with an Android version being released soon). Access will remain free for all parents throughout the festive period, before moving to a subscription model early next year. From then, Juno will cost £9.99 a month (or £49.99 a year) and can be cancelled at any time.
