Beautiful countryside walks in Gateshead – stay local and explore the outdoors away from the crowds.
There are plenty of hidden gems across Gateshead which are usually less populated than the more obvious spots and offer some beautiful scenic walks.
Regular walks have been a must for our family during lockdown with having two little ones constantly full of energy! We’ve been lucky to discover some lovely walks right from our doorstep that we’ve never taken advantage of before. Even a 5 minute car journey has given us a whole new world of places to explore, and can make it feel like you’re miles away from everything.
Did you know, Gateshead has over 20 designated countryside sites with some beautiful meadows and woodlands. Gibside, Chopwell Woods, Thornley Woods, Watergate Park and Derwenthaugh Park may be the first that come to mind (you can find more info on these and many more popular spots in Parks & The Outdoors). However, there are plenty of lovely walks that are less well known, and may well become a new family favourite. There’s a quick summary below to help you find your nearest sites, just click the links to find out more details for each one from Gateshead Council. If you want a few extra options nearby, there are also plenty of quiet nature reserves and railway paths in Durham.
Please bear in mind that wherever you’re heading, amenities at many sites – such as toilets, cafés, shops and play areas, – may remain closed, and services such as bin collections might not be operational so you may have to take rubbish home with you.
