Changes to road layout around Trinity Square, from Fri 24th Sep 2021
You may be aware of the traffic congestion issues around Trinity Square recently, which were further exacerbated by heavier traffic due to several events taking place on the weekend of 17th-19th September.
Gateshead Council have released a statement confirming that changes will be made to the road layout from Friday 24th September 2021 to help simplify traffic movements. You can find a summary of the key points below, along with a map to help visualise the changes.
The traffic signals at the exit of Trinity Square to be shut off.
The layout of Lambton Street and Nelson Street (which form the main access to the Trinity Square car park) will be amended.
All traffic exiting from Trinity Square car park must turn left and use Nelson Street and the West Central Route.
There will be no longer be access for through traffic from east to west along Lambton Street.
Access will still be possible from the east along Lambton Street, and from the west along Nelson Street (including to businesses on the northern side of Nelson Street).
Additional yellow warning signs will be positioned at the Oakwellgate roundabout and on the approaches, as well as on Askew Road.
Gateshead Council have stated that further analysis will take place in the medium term to improve the management of traffic flows, including at Bensham roundabout (junction of A184 and B1426), Regent Terrace/Charles Street and the Park Lane roundabout.
